Strong Candidates Required for Local Elections

Local Elections happen this October and we are calling for strong candidates to consider standing for Marlborough District Council.

Local government is not just about roads and rubbish — though those are important too. It's about shaping the long-term future of our region: how we grow sustainably, how we support innovation and industry, how we care for our environment, and how we make Marlborough a place where our young people want to stay and build their futures.

That’s why we need strong candidates to stand. We need candidates who bring vision, integrity, and a real understanding of the complex issues facing our region. We need people who are willing to listen, collaborate, and make evidence-based decisions that serve the wider good.

As the voice of local business, we are clearly interested in candidates who understand the challenges of business and the role of economic development in community wellbeing. Marlborough has world-leading industries in viticulture, aquaculture, and tourism. But we also face real challenges: infrastructure pressures, housing shortages, a declining CBD, workforce skills gaps, and the impacts of climate change. These issues require councillors who are proactive, knowledgeable, and ready to work constructively with both the private sector and central government.

And to our wider community; make sure you have your say. Ensure your details are up to date. Unlike the General Election where you turn up at a voting place, local elections are postal voting. To ensure you receive your voting papers in the mail, the Electoral Commission needs to have your correct address before 1 August. If you miss that deadline, Council can issue you with special voting papers. It’s easy to check and update your details via www.vote.nz.

National voter turnout in our last local elections was just over 40%, and a just handful of votes made the difference for some of our local candidates. Every vote counts - so take the time to engage with the election process. Ask candidates tough questions. Attend debates. Make an informed vote.

Local elections matter. Let’s ensure Marlborough is led by people who care deeply, think clearly, and act boldly.

Nominations opened early July for candidates who wish to stand for Marlborough District Council in this year’s local government elections. Completed nomination documents must be received by the Electoral Officer no later than 12 noon on Friday 1 August 2025.
